Patient Services

The Patient Services Department focuses on the hospitalized care, nursing, treatment and diagnostics of our in-patients. This includes certified veterinary technicians, assistants and kennel aides. Available positions include:

Anesthesia Technician

The Anesthesia Technician(s) is/ are members of the Oradell Animal Hospital Patient Services Department and their main function is to provide high quality care to the surgical/MRI/CT patients. These technicians work as a team to provide the safest care and environment for our surgical patients including:

(1) Monitoring anesthesia

(2) Pre-operative, intra-op, and post-operative treatments (via surgeon’s or case Doctor’s instruction)

(3) Maintenance and management of surgery suite and equipment

(4) Introduction and training of other staff members, and new surgery technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring anesthesia
    • Visualizing normal arrhythmias.
    • Visualizing abnormal aspects of complexes and knowledge of how that affects the patient, and what to do.
    • Electrocardiographic monitoring
    • Pulse- Ox monitoring.
    • Use of esophageal-stethoscope.
    • Intravenous therapy (at surgical volumes).
    • Tangible vital monitoring (such as mucus membranes or capillary refill time).
    • Blood pressure as needed.
    • Patient assessment via oral communication and record history.
    • Constant assessment of levels of anesthesia.
  • Procedural Preparation and Care
    • Preparing instruments for particular procedures
    • Ensuring proper recumbence of patient for surgeon’s needs.
    • Logging of procedure & review of appropriate paperwork.
    • Recording of vital statistics as often as is possible, on anesthesia report.
    • Completion of post- operative treatment slip
      • ICU checks & frequency
      • IV fluid therapy rates
      • Pain management information
      • Grooming needs
      • Timing of additional treatments or necessary procedures
      • Biopsy reports and care
  • Surgeon / Technician Interaction
    • Communication regarding procedural needs
    • Notification of changes in patient status.

    • Retrieval of any unforeseen surgical instruments as needs arise.

        • Maintaining a sterile & clean environment.
        • Awareness of surgical caseload, and keeping the system flowing.
        • During procedures, being aware of the surgeon’s ‘set up’ table & keeping it neat and in ample supply of necessary items.
        • Keeping the anesthesia machines in proper working condition, including their level of anesthetic (currently Isoflurane).
      • Management of surgical suite & equipment
        • Making sure suite is clean & tidy
        • Assuring suite is adequately stocked.
        • Maintain suites appearance & organization
        • Being aware of any malfunctions of monitors or equipment, and notifying the appropriate person.
      • Training
        • Introducing technical staff members to their newest arena.
        • Shadowing those technicians so as to instruct them in the art of surgery, and enabling those technicians to follow all of the above mentioned items.
        • Supplying Nitrogen lines to medical equipment
    • Requirements

    • Individual should be Credentialed Veterinary Technician and conform to OAH standards (Veterinary Technician Level)

Cardiology Technician

The purpose of this position is to assist the veterinarians and technicians with patient care in all areas of our emergency practice. These duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Schedule and edit appointments
  • Communicate with referring veterinarians

  • Patient restraint

Emergency Critical Care Technician

The purpose of this position is to assist the veterinarians and technicians with patient care in all areas of our emergency practice. These duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Triage patients coming in on emergency
  • Assist the critical care department with treatments and administer medications
  • Advanced veterinary nursing care
  • Advanced phlebotomy skills including central line and Cavafix placement
  • Care of urinary catheters, NG tubes, and chest tubes

Neurology Technician

The neurology technician is responsible for working with the doctors to manage the flow of the department on their shifts. Including but not limited to: appointments, surgical cases, in hospital cases, diagnostics etc. Neurology technicans work directly with the board certified neurologists to provide the highest quality of patient care. They must have excellent communication skills and during down time, may be asked to provide care in other departments within Patient Services. This may include areas like Surgery, Critical Care Unit, other specialties etc. Patient Services operates as one department with many departments within. Must be a team player and willing to help in all areas.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with morning rounds
  • Restraining patients

Patient Care Coordinator

The Patient Care Coordinator will work closely with the Patient Services Team, Client Services, and Clinic Services to help maintain the excellent quality of care we give our patients during their stay.  The Patient Care Coordinator role is to provide compassionate care and consideration to our patients and clients by coordinating their release and/or visitation. This person has a reasonable skill level and knowledge in the veterinary field. They are able to manage the daily routines of coordinating visits of hospitalized patients to their owners. The Patient Care Coordinator is even tempered and is able to multi-task many requests at one time acting as patient/doctor/client liaison.  They have frequent positive interactions with our clients, as well as coordinating patient visits; they also prepare the patients for discharge. The Patient Care Coordinator organizes any patient belongings, medications, food, and discharge instructions communicating with all departments involved. The goal of this position is to uphold the outstanding patient care and integrity that Oradell Animal Hospital provides for our patients and clients.

 

Responsibilities

Patient /Client Care

  • The assistant will be able to handle routine nursing care, husbandry, nutritional requirements of critical and postoperative patients.
  • Be able to recognize and fulfill emergent needs of the patient and notify proper personnel
  • Manage the needs of emergent and surgical patients at a quick pace successfully balancing skills with making good judgments, being the patient client advocate.

Nursing Care

  • Stay up to date with procedures, drugs, protocols
  • Must have wide range of knowledge in the animal medical field
  • Become familiar with critical care nursing, surgical procedures/nursing, physical therapy
  • Refer to Oradell Standards of Care

Communication

  • Be aware of the hospital policies and ensure the shift is running smoothly, become familiar with daily care protocols- train assigned individuals as determined by managers. 
  • Keep track of the resources used to manage the organization of releases and visits. Eg; dry erase board, markers, paper work, etc..
  • Inform shift supervisor of any positive or negative concerns regarding staff or issues that pertain to patient discharges and/or visits, shift needs, any items that make expedite releases or visits in a timely manner, etc.
  • Discuss ideas about Patient Care Service or other departments improvements with supervisor/manager.

PHYSICAL REHABILITATION TECHNICIAN/ASSISTANT
  • Work as a team as well as independently to be able to facilitate all rehabilitation treatments. This includes land exercises, underwater treadmill exercises, massage, hot/cold therapy, cold laser therapy, and other customized treatments pertaining to rehabilitation
  • Collaborate professionally with all coworkers to ensure high quality treatments and patient care
  • Keep timely and accurate records of patient treatment progress. Report any issues to the lead Veterinarian.
  • Assist in performing and customizing treatments according to patient needs and as directed by the veterinarian
  • Follow all directives on treatment plans based on the individual needs of the patient assessed by the Physical Rehab Veterinarian
  • Review with client’s home exercises or aftercare
  • Maintain a clean and organized environment with the Physical Rehab room, and treadmill area
  • Maintain all rehab equipment including underwater treadmill, land exercise equipment, cold laser etc.
  • Order and stock supplies as necessary to the rehabilitation department
  • All other related duties as assigned
  • Communicate with clients, handle scheduling and all aspects of customer service within the rehab department

 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to handle and restrain canine and feline patients (exotics a plus but not required)
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Able to perform as part of a team
  • Must have ability to follow detailed directions and established protocols as well as work independently and proactively
  • Bend or kneel for patient treatments and not mind getting wet
  • Basic computer skills and and willingness to learn our EMR system to be able to complete necessary paperwork and record keeping
  • 1+ years experience in a Veterinary assistant role or higher encouraged
  • Must have flexibility necessary to work weekends, holidays and additional hours as needed within the Patient Services department guidelines
  • CCRP (Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner) or CCRVN (Certified Canine Rehabilitation Veterinary Nurse) or certification in progress as well as cold laser certification is encouraged but not required

Veterinary Assistant

Clinic Services

The Clinic Services Department focuses on the Outpatient clinic. This includes certified veterinary technicians and assistants supporting veterinarians during clinic appointments, as well as assisting ER doctors in the clinic. Members of our clinic services department will also work with our CSRs to ensure a seamless client experience. Areas where one might assist in the outpatient clinic: general practice, internal medicine, oncology, pharmacy, laboratory, and client communication/education.

Clinic services assistant

The Clinic Services Assistants are members of the Oradell Animal Hospital Health Care Team who are necessary to providing high quality service to clients and patients during their clinic visits.  They provide (a) technical assistance for the doctors with all procedures and activities of the clinic, (b) client education by explaining procedures and giving instructions, (c) maintenance of exam room and equipment, cleanliness, and inventory, and (d) assistance to Client Services and Patient Services personnel when needed for smooth and efficient hospital service.

These duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Veterinarian assistance: assist doctors in exam rooms, assist with hospital admissions and releases, TPRs, patient restraint, phlebotomy, vaccines, entering medications into the computer, and discussing heartworm, flea and tick preventatives, elective vaccines, dental care etc., with clients
  • Completing daily and miscellaneous (assigned) tasks: Stocking and cleaning the pods and exam rooms, preparing puppy/kitten kits, urine kits, sympathy cards
  • Assisting the Client Services staff in placing clients in appropriate rooms, and keeping open communication among Client Services, Clinic Services, and Patient Services personnel
  • Client education: teaching and counseling clients (instruction for: new diabetics – how to inject insulin and properly care for a diabetic pet; subcutaneous fluids – how to give fluids under the skin and properly care for a pet in renal failure; E-tubes– how to feed, medicate, and care for a patient with an E-tube; Subcutaneous injections – how to inject a medication under a patient’s skin)
  • Maintaining knowledge of client education materials and Clinic Services stock: handouts, pamphlets, grief booklets, sympathy cards, all exam room and pod instruments and supplies, etc.

Emergency Pod Technician

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Emergency/Critical Care Service in a team-based approach to enhance our client’s experience through improved client service and efficient patient care during our busier times.  This pod technician position is designed to support the emergency service (doctors, clients, patients) rather than an individual veterinarian These duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Communicating with and updating clients
  • Communicating with triage technicians, assistants, client service staff, ER staff doctors, residents and interns
  • Assisting the flow of the Triage System and assist triage technician when necessary

Laboratory Technician

The purpose of this position is to provide high quality service to clients and patients during their clinic or hospital visits by collecting specimens such as blood, stool and urine and testing/processing such specimens

Oncology Technician

The purpose of this position is to assist the veterinarians and technicians with patient care in all areas of our oncology practice. These duties include, but are not limited to:

  • assist oncologist with daily rounds
  • assist oncologist with clinic appointments
  • assist with client communication (in-hospital and outpatient cases)
  • assist with all facets of paperwork, including treatment records and requisitions
  • schedule outpatient and admission appointments
  • stock supplies and maintain working area (room, hood, etc.)
  • coordinate and handle chemotherapy treatments and assist oncologist with diagnostic procedures (including calculating dosages, preparation and administration of chemotherapeutic agents, and post-treatment monitoring)

Pharmacy Technician

The purpose of this position is to provide high quality service to clients and patients during their clinic or hospital visits by preparing medications under the direction and supervision of the veterinarians and providing client education by explaining and giving instructions.

Client Services

The Client Services Department facilitates all aspects of a clients visit beginning with phone calls to make an appointment, checking clients and their pets in upon arrival, followed by the checkout process when the visit is complete. These are “people positions” requiring strong interpersonal skills. There is very little animal contact involved.

Client Services Representative

The Client Services Representative will work closely with the veterinary staff and all other departments within the hospital as well as with clients. Primary responsibilities will include scheduling appointments, providing hospitalized pet updates to clients, cashiering, and medical record maintenance.

These duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist veterinary staff in scheduling  surgeries and procedures
  • Help facilitate  cases/admits/transfers  from referral veterinarians
  • Communicate with clients regarding updates/appointments/estimates

Hospital Description: Oradell Animal Hospital has been providing small animal care for the residents of northern New Jersey for 60 years.  The hospital is located in a highly populated area that provides a clientele committed to quality pet care. We are a full service, AHAA accredited hospital with 60 veterinarians including interns, residents, general practitioners and board certified specialists in Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Cardiology, Surgery, Nutrition, ABVP, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Radiology, Neurology, and Emergency and Critical Care Medicine.  Our 24-hour facility has a very busy emergency service, which provides a full and interesting caseload.  Oradell Animal Hospital is a VetCOT certified Level II Veterinary Trauma Center, as well as a certified Level II VECCS Facility.  Our 1200 square foot Critical Care Unit is a highly equipped, state of the art facility that includes 4 oxygen cages, a Puritan Bennett 840 ventilator, a Mindray DPM6 monitor for continuous cage side monitoring, multiple point of care testing capabilities, and a Mindray Central Station for continuous ECG monitoring via telemetry.

Presently there are four internists on staff, and we are seeking a fifth.  Board certification is preferred; however, we will consider individuals with credentials accepted by the ACVIM.  Third year residents are encouraged to apply.
