Signs Your Pet May Be in Pain

While animals can’t verbally communicate that they’re in pain, they do exhibit certain behaviors that tell us they’re hurting:

  • Abnormal or hunched posture
  • Behavioral changes
  • Crying, whining or vocalizing
  • Drooling
  • Excessive panting
  • Growling
  • Hiding
  • Loss of appetite
  • Not grooming regularly
  • Restlessness
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Squinting

If your pet shows any of these signs, it’s important to have them evaluated by your veterinarian.

When Pain Management Is Appropriate

There are various medical conditions for which pain management can be an effective approach to not only relieve your pet’s discomfort but also help them remain active and engaged:

  • Acute pain such as from soft-tissue injuries or trauma, or post-surgery
  • Chronic pain such as from arthritis, dental disease, cancer, or spinal conditions such as intravertebral disc disease (IVDD)

Effective pain management for pets often requires a multi-faceted approach that combines various modalities including:

  • Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), gabapentin (for nerve pain), opioids (such as Tramadol), corticosteroids (such as Prednisone), monoclonal antibody injections, and joint supplements
  • Acupuncture
  • Can refer patients for physical rehabilitation and laser
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy
  • Weight management to ease pressure on joints, especially in older pets
  • Environmental modifications such as ramps for easier access, non-slip flooring
